As a bride to be I’m really enjoying making things for my wedding. This DIY, however, is perfect for a hen party or bridal shower, whatever you call it. Using my Cricut Explore Air 2 Machine I show you how to create a fun personalised bridal sash. I love the idea of wearing a sash on my hen but this quirky mermaid one is more me than the usual shop brought styles. See how I make this Mermaid to Mrs Bride Sash below.
What you need:
- Cricut Explore Air 2
- Cricut Easy Press
- Glitter Iron On Vinyl in White & Blue
- Weeding tool
- Cricut Standard cutting mat
- Turquoise Cotton Fabric 1 Meter
- Tape Measure
- Sewing Machine
- Matching cotton thread
- Safety pin
How to make it
Start the sash by laying out your fabric flat and fold over to double it. Measure 5 inches width for the sash including seam allowance. Measure roughly 28 inches long on the fold for the size of the sash but depending on your size this can be varied. Draw a diagonal line from the end about 5 inches in and cut out to get an angled edge. Once this pattern is cut, cut another one so you have 2 pieces.
Sew half an inch all the way around the pieces whilst leaving a 4-5 inch hole to turn it out. Once the sewing is done trim any edges around the points and turn inside out. Finish by hand sewing the hold shut with a simple stitch shown.
On Cricut Design Space make the text by choosing a font and writing ‘Mermaid to Mrs’. I played around with the spacing and added a flick on the end of the ‘S’ to give it more detail. To source the shell pattern I searched on the Design Space for shells and this one was an existing style on there. I adjusted the sizes to fit the sash by using the measurements on the Cricut Design Space screen. Place the vinyl shiny side down on the standard cutting mat and cut out your pieces. Weed off the excess vinyl from the pieces ready to iron onto the sash.
Using the Easy Press
Heat up the Cricut Easy Press, instructions for this will be on the Cricut Website and in the video below. Once ready run the Easy Press over the sash to make the seams flat and smooth surface ready for the vinyl. Place the vinyl in the center of the sash on one side and start to press on the vinyl pieces. Carefully remove the protective plastic and that’s it now just place the sash around you and do up with a safety pin.
Mermaid to Mrs Bride Sash
This Mermaid to Mrs Bride Sash is the perfect personalised touch for a hen party. Not all hen’s need to include tacky memorabilia but this one makes styling hen parties more fun and individual. You can use this DIY to create any sash you want but I went with the fun mermaid theme. I’ll definitely be making more for my hen weekend which is in Brighton with my girls. I hope you enjoyed this DIY post with the use of my Cricut Explore Air 2 and Cricut Easy Press, let me know what you think in the comments or on social media.
