Handmade Tilly Buttons Bertha Cardigan

I am so excited to share this sewing make today, it’s become one of my favourites for many reasons. It is the Bertha Cardigan pattern from Tilly Buttons Make It Simple book. Not only can you make it within a couple of hours, it’s super comfortable and easy to wear but I am also the face of the pattern in the book. It’s so exciting seeing my little face in there especially with how much I love the style of the pattern. In this blog post, I talk about 2 Bertha Cardigans I have sewn and finished.

Bertha Cardigan in Sew Me Sunshine Knit

For this version of the Bertha Cardigan, I wanted something perfect for throwing over my spring wardrobe items. I saw this fabric on Sew Me Sunshine and knew the woven wicker knit fabric would be a lovely cardigan. The pinky-peach colour is lovely for spring and I knew it would cover my spring-summer outfits really well. The fabric was actually pretty easy to sew, although the edges rolled slightly when cut, they soon flattened with a steamy press. The sewing process for this Bertha Cardigan is so quick you can cut it in half an hour and have it sewn together in a couple of hours. Within an afternoon you can whip up a cosy piece of outwear that’s perfect for all year round layering.

The first version of the Bertha I made was in a thicker sweater knit fabric in 3 different colours from New Craft House. I wanted to make it in 3 different bright shades so it can be worn over all my outfits. It is a slightly thicker fabric so it feels really cosy to wear which is perfect for homemade loundewear. They make such versatile and great pieces to have in your wardrobe.

Overall I would highly recommend the Tilly Buttons book Make It Simple. All the patterns in the book are designs to be quick easy makes which I am loving. During lockdown being able to sew your own loungewear together is a fabulous way to stay busy and make yourself some cosy pieces. Try it for yourself and I am sure you’ll be whipping up lots of them in no time.
