My hair care secrets | Update

You may remember when I posted my hair care secrets back in March 2014, which I can’t believe is nearly 2 years ago. I thought it was time I did an updated version, with products I am currently using and other hair care tips I have learnt along the way.
With my recent re-style and update back in November, I have been trying new things with my hair. This has mainly been upkeep of style and colour but of course knowing more about treatment of hair and how to look after it. My budget doesn’t allow for expensive salon products so I am a big fan of trying out high street products and testing the results. As with my previous hair secrets post, I am going to break it into sections as this makes it easier to explain and also separate the important factors.

Grooming and Treatments:

1. Tangle Teasers!! If you haven’t already got one (then why not) go buy one, they are amazing even if you have thin hair, as they prevent breakage when brushing. It makes it much easier to tame knots when brushing dry or wet hair, which can prevent breaking off split ends and effect the bounce and elasticity.
2. Spray on a leave in conditioner, this will soften the hair and leave it feeling soft all day, I like using the L’oreal Damage Control one. It’s even better when spraying onto towel dried hair before blow drying, as makes it really silky and soft.
3. For loss of hair and balding (which unfortunately can happen at any age) I highly recommend the Harley Street Clinic for a FUE hair transplant. Most people associate this with men, but anyone can have it done. This involves taking hair from another area of your body, usually the back of the neck (called donor hair) and then transferred to the area of the scalp where needed. Quite a large thing to have done but worth it for the results.
4. ‘Pre-Poo’: I mentioned this term in my last post but want to again because it’s such a great technique that I use all the time. It’s a treatment done before shampooing your hair that helps aid against a shampoos tendency to strip the hair of it’s natural oils and moisture. I apply a coconut oil but you can use deep conditioners and masks. It is always better to use natural or organic product without silicone in as these can actually cause more long term damage.

Washing:

1. Once you have done the ‘Pre-Poo‘ treatment you will find washing a lot more satisfying. I wash my hair on average twice a week and have found doing it less means the colour stays more vibrant and there is less breakage.
2. Keeping colour vibrant when you have bright shades is always difficult, however the LIVE Schwarzkopt colour refresher is my current favourite thing to do recently between salon visits. It goes on like a shampoo but just touches up the colour and makes it appear freshly coloured and bright.

Styling:

1. With my new style I often use my hair dryer and hair straighteners so have been loving the VO5 Plump it up Amplifying Blow Dry Lotion, it creates natural looking thickness, volume and bounce but also includes a heat defence! Which is perfect so you don’t have to use too many products at once time, which can weigh down the hair.
2. After washing I often put my hair in a plait with a bit of argan oil just before bed. This prevents hair from getting knotted during sleep, keeps hair frizz free, is a subtle treatment and means when I undo the plait I have natural looking waves for the day.
I hope you found these things slightly helpful to your own hair care routine. Let me know in the comments what things you do and what products you use, so we can all share our tips.
